Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s mother Elisabeth has died at the age of 81, according to German media.
The former Borussia Dortmund coach is believed to have last visited his mum on her 80th birthday, but Covid-19 restrictions stopped him from returning for the funeral which took place this week.
Elisabeth, who passed away in mid-January, had three children with Norbert Klopp after their marriage in 1960, with Jurgen the youngest sibling alongside Stefanie and Isolde.
Klopp has said: “She meant everything to me. She was a proper mum in the best sense of the word. As a believer in Christ, I know that she is now in a better place.
“Owing to these terrible times, I can’t be at the funeral, (but) as soon as circumstances allow, we’ll hold a wonderful, fitting memorial for her.”
As shared by Rob Harris, German outlet Schwarzwaelder-bote outlined details of Elisabeth’s tragic passing on Wednesday morning.
Anfield Watch then wrote in tribute: “Jurgen Klopp’s mother, Elisabeth Klopp, has died at the age of 81.
“Because of the pandemic, Jurgen cannot attend the funeral.”
Elisabeth married Norbert Klopp back in 1960, and they went on to have three children in Stefanie, Isolde and Jurgen.
Their youngest has has gone on to be one of the greatest managers in world football, bringing Liverpool their first league title in 30 years.
